Reviews Featuring Tom Hanks
An original tale bringing out the best in a stellar cast, more than making up for the ever-so-slight impression that there’s been a mad rush to squeeze as much of the book’s content onto the big screen as possible.
Excellent performances, wonderful cinematography, observant direction, its 'pseudo-film noir’ feel, and a great soundtrack combine to make this one of the best films of recent years. This is a gangster film that can make you cry, but don’t bother watching if you’re just looking for a traditional gangster shoot-‘em-up because you’ll be disappointed – this story of relationships runs much deeper than that.
A lengthy but engrossing film experience. Just try to make sure you don’t watch it too soon before flying.
With stunning animation and a fantastic script, this is quite possibly the finest feature-length ‘toon ever made. Worth watching over and over again.
A perfect sequel to a perfect original.
Classic Hanks. Nuff said.
A marvellous, warm-hearted and funny take on American life, seen through the eyes of a character devoid of cynicism and virtually impossible to copy.
An enjoyable and entertaining, if not hugely original, sports movie.
A fairly entertaining slice of satire, this really isn’t as bad as it’s often made out to be.
Stonewall proof that Steven Spielberg, while a marvellous film-maker, possesses not a single cynical bone in his body. Which is actually kinda nice, in a Forrest Gumpy sort of way.
Quirky Coen brothers remake of Ealing classic is a blast (or two).
A marvellous piece of whimsy from the best mainstream actor and director of our generation. It might have a few faults, but they’re none of them terminal.
Eye-popping, exciting, and just a little bit creepy, this has to be the best Chrimbo flick of 2004.
Angels and Demons is an overlong, uninteresting affair which doesn’t live up to the blockbuster tag. Then again, it is not the worst film you could see this summer.
It’s redundant at this point to continue to praise these Pixar films, but they did it again, and it’s funny and heartbreaking and a little scary and one of the best films of the year.
